McKinney’s most rare wildlife habitat could be a thing of the past if nothing is done to manage the City’s commercial development.
The Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the last animal refuges of its kind in North Texas. Spanning 289 acres, the Heard Is home to over 250 bird species, and scores of other reptile, mammal, insect and fish species. Many migrating birds and butterflies depend on this oasis in order to safely reach their nesting grounds.
Established in 1967, the Heard has survived several challenges in the past including the construction of a cement plant and land fill precariously near the property. However, its latest challenge is one it may not be able to survive.
The City of McKinney is planning to expand its general aviation airport which is less than a mile away to accommodate commercial passenger air travel. This expansion represents a real environmental threat to the Heard’s existence..
To that end, the North Texas Conservation Association (NTCA) has filed a federal lawsuit designed to mitigate that threat by requiring a vigorous review of a previous City-authored environmental assessment (EA) that concluded the Heard would not be harmed. We feel, a new, complete EA will clearly expose several environmental threats and thereby provide cause to block the planned expansion. We believe we have a winning case against the City’s flawed and incomplete assessment.
However, we can only save this rare wildlife habitat if we can prosecute our case effectively. That’s why we need your support.
All it takes for this to happen is a few dollars from a lot of people. Our success depends not on how much one gives, but how many who give… and how often. Even a small, affordable monthly contribution can make a huge impact over time. We ask that you contribute any amount you can. Your tax-deductible gift will support the legal expenses and maximize our ability to fight against this misguided plan that threatens the Heard. Please join us in defending our North Texas environment. Your member support will make a difference.
Thank you for your commitment to a healthy and safe habitat not only for area wildlife but for North Texas citizens as well.
